Hi dear student,
I have been thinking for a few days what theme to pick for my next newsletter. Can‘t force the good stuff, and as you know I am not consulting AI, so I asked myself what I would like to hear right now. The answer I got was: do something nice!
So, today, as we are getting ready for a weekend I am sending you a simple nudge called “do something nice”. We all might have a completely different understanding what “nice” exactly means, so please take my suggestions only with a grain of salt.
When I think of doing something nice, the first thing that comes to my mind, is closing my computer and turning off my phone, so that whatever I decide doing I can do without distractions. The moment I sign off the cyberworld I start calming down and begin to fully enjoy each moment, drinking my morning brew without distractions, eating my breakfast without being bombarded with random and too often gruesome news, going for a walk and hang out with horses in my fjord, taking in all the power and beauty without distraction of any cell phone messages coming in. Picking up my carving knife and savoring the smell of wood, the process I make one woodchip at a time, fully focused in the now, undisturbed, undistracted, peacefully.
It sounds so simple and simple it is. We don’t have to travel to Iceland or Hawaii to start doing something nice, NICE is at our disposal pretty much all the time. A good cup of coffee is nice, so is eating breakfast, going for a walk is awesome, and building puppets, well that is of course hard to beat! But to truly savour all these nice things is the trick, a simple trick indeed if we manage to calm down our rambling minds for a little while. So, I would add a little meditation to my “nice-things-list”.
The best thing of granting myself to be fully in the moment and doing something nice, is that it gives me the energy, strength and joy to then going back into full gear being there for my loved ones, serving my students, my community. I will stay in my happy mode even when getting stuck in rush-hour traffic the next morning. It gives me the joyful heart to send out a calming smile to the stressed-out driver stuck in line right next to me. Smiling is of course something very nice to do, always!
Wishing you a super nice weekend from the Whalefjord here in Iceland,
Bernd
