Happy Birthday to a Brave Girl! — September 18, 2025

Happy Birthday to a Brave Girl!

Newsletter from July 18, 2025

Hi dear student,

Happy 80th Birthday Pippi Longstocking!! The renowned Swedish children’s book author Astred Lindgren explained that “Pippi represents my own childish longing for a person who has power but does not abuse it.” Although she is the strongest girl in the world, Pippi uses nonviolence to solve conflicts. She portrays unbound phantasy and creativity to protect other children from bullying and to maintain her own sovereignty. Pippi also has tremendous challenges, she missed her mom early in life, and her dad, if still alive, is a pirate far away sailing the south seas. She lives alone with an old unwanted horse and a little monkey. Yet, Pippi is the epitome of optimism. She is warmhearted, compassionate, kind, clever, generous, playful, witty and always finds a positive way to deal with all the many challenges in life.

It was not an option for me to say no to the invitation by the National Theater of Iceland to build two characters for a main stage Production of the famed children story. Those following me on social media have witnessed the making of the Monkey Mr. Nilsson and the Horse named Little Old Man.

Today I don’t want to talk about the challenges of making these puppets but rather acknowledge the absolute privilege of being able to take part in the creation of such a mega production! I am grateful and so proud of my little Island Nation, to invest in such elaborate artistic and cultural events. A marvelous team of way over hundred artists, administrators, actors, dancers, musicians, designers, technicians celebrated a whooping premier last weekend together with an overly enthusiastic audience. Over 50 performances are already sold out in advance, which means that thousands of children and their parents will get inspired by the brave, kind, loving, warm-hearted and optimistic Pippi.

Being widely rejected at first in 1944, the adventures of Pippi Longstocking were finally published in 1945 and have ever since encouraged generations of children around the globe to let their uniqueness shine despite all odds. For us artists the constant call remains, to keep the spirit up, just like Pippi did for 80 years; to nourish kindness over bitterness, humor over self-pity, protection over bullying, and to relentlessly use our unlimited creativity and brave hearts to nurture peace, healing and hope. Unrealistic????? … come watch the show!

Sending much love from the Whalefjord in Iceland, and if you feel someone you treasure could benefit from these newsletters, please invite them to sign up via our webpage worldsofpuppets.com.

Inspired Action — September 9, 2025

Inspired Action

Newsletter from September 9, 2025

Hi dear student,

To become a successful artist, it is wise to integrate all the various strengths and qualities of our human capacity, both the mind and the heart, both intuition and clear precise thinking.

Consciously integrating all these gifts will lead to INTEND, the focused, crystal clear concentration of energy to reach our goals.
In that context we must learn to differentiate between struggle and inspired action.

Most artist have most likely experienced both. They might have experienced the easy flow of following an inspiration, picked up a piece a wood and created the marionette of their dreams. Yet, when it came to selling their puppet show or paying the rent for their studio it caused anxiety and sleepless nights.

The good news is that we can learn to find the golden balance. We can decide to consciously break the cycle of being stuck in either dream land or analytical thinking. But we must truly want that and we must admit that we have a choice. We are not victims.

It is certainly easier to complain and join the “artists must struggle chorus” than doing our necessary homework. But is it really? Is it not way more satisfying to initiate the rewards of change and possibly experience the ease and flow of inspired action and clear intend?

How to get there? Well in all honesty it took me a lifetime of conscious learning and un- learning. It takes the decision and willingness to change, letting go of old limiting beliefs, being truly open for new ways to enter our lives.

In my experience the backbone to such a life is meditation and mindfulness. Stillness, and a quiet mind will allow for sacred inspiration to enter our being. Out from this stillness springs inspired action = Intend. And because inspired action is not created from our egoistic limited thinking mind but a higher source, the Universe will support these actions in miraculous ways, commonly known as the “Law of Attraction”.

Here you go, these were my insights after my morning meditation, that you hopefully don’t mind me sharing with you. And what will I do now? I will do some bookkeeping, fun bookkeeping I say, as this is part of my holistic experience of being a successful artist. Then later today I will assist with rehearsals on the stage of the National Theater of Iceland, where my live-size horse and monkey (I shared the building process on social media) will celebrate a Premiere next Saturday. Later in the afternoon I will meet my students online for a super fun Q and A session, where I am sure we shall continue this discussion.

So, I let you go with my best wishes for your artistic wellbeing. Remember, success is only 5% talent and 95% mindset … you can do it too!!

A Promise to My Dad — September 3, 2025

A Promise to My Dad

Newsletter from September 3, 2025

Hi dear student,

This week my Dad would have turned 100 years old. He passed on years back at the ripe age of 93 and was thus spared the challenges of Covid and the present political and social upheavals.

What he passed on to me were not only good genes, a fine sense of humour and generosity at large, but most importantly a mountain of kindness. And all that despite his painful and harsh upbringing in Nazi Germany, an alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother who was in fact killed by the Nazis simply for being ill. Don´t worry, I get back to the good stuff in a minute!!

Naturally my dad also passed on to me what I call “the German Backpack“, a load of unhealed traumas, secrets and burdens that are bound to impact the next generations to come, unless my generation is willing to dig into this backpack and actively starts the healing process.

Our performance of „The Puppet Master“ was the result of years of active searching and healing, a tour de force of opening up my heart and soul and an active effort to brake the repetitive and destructive cycle we are still witnessing unfolding in our world today.

What about the good stuff I promised? Well, here it is, we can brake the cycle and overcome, we can heal and support healing. But it all starts with ourselves. No blaming game, no finger pointing, not complaining and not being the victim will change the world. It must start with our own true inner transformation.

From here the ripple effect of our own healing will spread it‘s magic. As a parent, a teacher, a politician, a cleaner or a puppeteer, we will impact the world around us for the better.

So, I promised my late Dad, or Paps as we called him, to do my homework and then pick up his golden rule of kindness and compassion. I am grateful for his legacy he left behind, and I am also ever so grateful to all my students and colleges that are equally comitted to let their light shine. We are in this together!

Oh, there are more good things to announce, great news from Worlds of Puppets, but I save them for a later Newsletter. For today I simply send you all my loving thoughts and strengthening winds from the Whalefjord here in Iceland.

Of Mosquitos and Dandelion — August 8, 2025

Of Mosquitos and Dandelion

Newsletter from August 8, 2025

Hi dear student,

In my last newsletter I shared my fascination and overwhelming inspiration I received from witnessing the volcanic eruptions here in Iceland. More important though I esteem the mindset and keen eye to be aware of the small everyday wonders constantly offered to us. It is easy to get filled with energy and joy when living on our small magical island close to the arctic circle, but no matter where we are in this world, we can take note of gifts of inspiration and hope.

It might be an overused cliché to cite the resilient dandelion cracking the asphalt, yet, who cannot use a little dose of the hopeful enthusiasm of a child holding up the magical seedball – puffball – “Pusteblume” of that dandelion, taking a deep breath and releasing the multitude of little seed-parachutes into the world and thus planting new bright yellow flowers to decorate the world and crack the dull asphalt.

worlds-of-puppets-dandelion

It is a free gift, a free choice to keep the eyes and mind open for those wonders. They certainly help me to keep going in times of frustration, horror and powerlessness about the daily news.

I like to remind my students of Puppetry to just spend time observing a common housefly or even a mosquito, to admire their glistening wings and acrobatic flying skills defying all our feeble attempts to catch them! It keeps us humble and appreciative if we remember that we are all but a small part of a larger network of life on earth, us humans, the dandelion and the mosquito. Maybe that will give us the strength to continue lending our energy to counterbalance the arrogant, ignorant and straight out evil political powers at work. Suspecting that the common fly will most likely outlive our human existence on this planet I find not only humbling but it also puts a smile on my face.

Sending warmest regards from North-West Iceland, where I just performed on a small annual Theater Festival and will now retreat for a few days into the remote regions of the West Fjords. Good to turn off WIFI for a while and focus on the dandelions and maybe spot a whale offshore … I’ll be back soon!

Humbling Inspiration — July 29, 2025

Humbling Inspiration

Newsletter from July 29, 2025

Hi dear student,

Few experiences have humbled, empowered and inspired me as much as witnessing our volcanic eruptions here in Iceland. To watch the hot lava explode from the Center of The Earth and run like a hot river down the slopes of the mountain is to witness the Grandmaster of creation at work.

Thanks to all who have asked about our safety. Fortunately the presently active volcano is perfectly located, so no one is in direct danger at this point, we are just inspired and grateful to be able to witness such magnificent event.

A few years back I took a still hot lava sculpture along as a reminder of all this beauty and creative energy waiting in all of us to be released.

The eruption is only about 30 km away from our workshop, from where we can share the inspiration with our students from all corners of the world. Let us never forget that life is grand and miraculous!

Sending you all some volcanic, creative energy from our little island paradise in the Middle of the Atlantic Ocean!

What It Means to Be an Artist — July 14, 2025

What It Means to Be an Artist

Newsletter from July 14, 2025

Hi dear student,

I have been contemplating what it really means for me to be an artist:

  • It is not about perfection; it is about being human.
  • It is the brave imperfection that makes the human, soulful and unique artistic effort such a powerful tool.
  • It is about a fragile yet one-of-a-kind chance to make a difference.
It is about finding your distinctive creative spirit, your eccentric, erratic, odd, outlandish, peculiar, quaint and strange reflections of the world.
  • It is about your relentless reflections that bring new visions to this world.
  • It is about honing these gifts and visions given to you.
  • It is about lending your visions and voice to those that have none.
  • It is about your unmissable gifts to this world.
  • It is about being honest to yourself so you can be honest to the world, not driven by money, fame or self-satisfaction, but by the underlying, elementary longing to share and serve.
  • It is about being brave enough to share, against all odds.

This is what came to my mind when contemplating my life as an artist, and I can imagine there are as many versions to this poem as there are artist in the world. I esteem it healthy and valuable to ask ourselves what our occupation really means to us.

Like always, sending warm wishes from the Whale Fjord in Iceland for a smashing week full of creative joy.

Remembering Our Own Voices and Dreams — July 7, 2025

Remembering Our Own Voices and Dreams

Newsletter from July 7, 2025

Hi dear student,
Can we remember our own voices and dreams?

Most of us are addicted to little handheld devices that bombard us with random information, messages, music and commercial ads we have not consciously and carefully selected. The lure of seemingly cost-free communication with loved ones and clients has even the suspicious ones among us succumb to the lure of the online genie.

What to do? If we thought those incredible tools would unite the world in a great effort to establish world peace and counterbalance global warming, we were obviously mistaken. If we thought that true information would penetrate ignorance and that history lessons learned would avoid the repeating of the same horrendous human crimes all over again, we have been disappointed.

That was the dark part of my newsletter today. Now comes the peptalk:

Most folks on my mailing list still have many choices! We can heal the phone addiction and start f.ex. by choosing a “traditional” alarm clock to wake us up in the morning to avoid the instantaneous cyberspace bombardment at least until we have taken the time to breathe into our own being, unpolluted. We can choose to meditate and read a book. Remember books, they are awesome. Remember meditation and mindfulness, yes, also you can reap the proven benefits.

If we allow ourselves to be surrounded by a constant onslaught of distractions and thoughts not our own, we will lose ourselves. So, for heaven’s sake, or should I rather say for the sake of our sanity, please let us take authority and chose what we want! We wake up every morning with a limited amount of energy to make it through the day. Let us choose wisely how we spend this energy, and how we can best conserve and replenish it.

To know what we truly want, what our heart and soul needs, we might have to relearn to listen deeply. To listen we need silence, which has become a commodity these days. Silence and stillness, like breathing and focus are something we might have to consciously chose. Out of silence and stillness comes a call to action, not based on fear, not corrupted by somebody else’s agenda, but your own deeper calling.

If you do not listen to your own deeper voice, who’s voice are you listening to? If you do not follow your own dreams, who’s dreams are you following?

I wish you mindfulness and strength for this coming week from the Whalefjord here in Iceland.

Reload, Recharge and Build Some Puppets — June 30, 2025

Reload, Recharge and Build Some Puppets

Newsletter from June 30, 2025

Hi dear student,
Why do I promote carving and building puppets so much? Because I know what potential benefits it has not only for the world in general but especially for the one carving.

The act of creating, the focus needed to succeed leaves a significant mark on the creator. That is if we hone a mindset that truly allows us to reap the benefits of this process. If we carry our judgemental thinking, our rushing foreward to our workbench we are missing the point. The true gift of creating is slowing down, not speeding up, it is about savouring the moment more than projecting into a possible future outcome.

We have decided to undertake the journey of learning to carve and build puppets because it has been calling us, now we might be wise to truly enjoy the process of learning; choosing the right piece of wood, savouring every pencil stroke, every wood-chip, the sound of slicing, drilling and sawing, the smell of the wood, the careful attention to detail, adjusting the many parts until they fit together … the becoming of a one of a kind wooden puppet, born from your hands and I dare say born from your heart and soul.

Rushing, cursing, judging has only counter productive value on this journey. Rather put a gentle smile on your face and have that cup of tea right next to your chisels and saw. Breathe, relax those shoulders and celebrate that time you invest in this creative process. It will impact you and it will impact your work and of course it will then impact the world around you. You want peace in the world? How about some true peace on your workbench first!

Without thinking much about it we routinely recharge our phone and reload our computer. How about we reload, recharge ourselves and build some puppets now!

Wishing you creative joy and peace for this brand new week from the Whalefjord here in Iceland,
Bernd

Our Personal Choices — June 23, 2025

Our Personal Choices

Newsletter from June 23, 2025

Hi dear student,
What can I possibly say today that will support you keep moving on and keep bringing light into the shadow of hate, fear and deception clouding our precious world?

If you are in the center of terror, I am completely out of my league …I simply cannot claim to know what I would do if bombs would kill my children, neighbors and friends. Pick up a gun or dig out my Puppets from under the rubble and keep doing puppet shows? My believe is that puppets are more powerful, but that is easy to say from my save heaven on a little island close to the arctic circle.

I send messages of hope to my friends in Iran, Israel and Palestine, Russia and Ukraine, and all the places I was once so fortunate to travel with my puppets where now the grim, ugly claw of war and destruction defies the calling of humanity. I send messages of love and compassion sharing with them that I hope they will soon play with puppets again, that their children will see soulful Art, songs of beauty and listen to stories of the power of kindness.

I have not experienced war, I was only raised by a generation so deeply impacted by everything that seems to be repeating itself now despite all we could have learned but did not. I am forever grateful that they made it possible for me and encouraged me to invest in music, education and travel the world, that they were proud of me being a puppeteer and always supported my unorthodox ways of carving out a career in one of the most underrated yet powerful professions in the arts.

bernd-travel-international-community15

So, if I am not sure what strength I would really have to keep performing with puppets when bombs would reach also my little island, I do though want to invest my energy and time right here and now, to build that strength.

I want to build my success as a professional puppeteer, as the manager and Artistic director of my online school not only on the common powerful mindsets of success: being curious, resilient, positive, focused, strategic, proactive, adaptable, collaborative, growth-minded. I want to build the success on the foundation of respect, gratitude, empathy, compassion, intimacy, kindness, openness and love.

I have failed in all those principals, often and repeatedly. Yet today is a new day and I still have the luxury of freedom of choice. I know by now that I need to slow down to a more sustainable speed of life, to consciously nurture the calling of the heart and the power of a calm and serene mind. So when that crucial moment arrives it will catch me planting a tree or with a puppet in my hand, and a warm pounding heart that will keep the flame of love and hope alive.

Sending warm wishes of creative strength and positive choices for the week to come from the Whale fjord here in Iceland. May peace prevail on Earth!

Arts, Politics, Puppets and Some Deep Rest — June 18, 2025

Arts, Politics, Puppets and Some Deep Rest

Newsletter from June 18, 2025

Hi dear student,
How are you doing? I hope that this newsletter, the first after a longer brake, finds you in good spirits, despite all the chaos going on in the world.

How can we best stay sane and productively active these days? Like always, an attitude of service might also serve ourselves the best. It can help keeping our focus and determination in even the worst of situations. There is ALWAYS an opportunity to plant a seed of hope, to share a dose of inspiration and a random or concrete act of kindness.

Also, let us remember that the world has always been a crazy place of chaos and plight. But people before us have moved on despite all the odds, and so can we. Whatever we might be facing now, can drive us on to truly give our best, to make our voices count, to make our Art count. We move on as well and give our best!

Is this a call to action? Well, here it comes, maybe we will need some deep rest first, maybe we need to realign, re-think and re-feel how we want to proceed in our lives, and how to best spend our precious energy. If the world is spinning too fast and loud for us, we might want to look for some stillness and silence in our own private lives. This at least is what I needed to do for a while before finally sitting down again to write this newsletter.

puppet-in-workshop

In our online courses we share and support each other with our many individual creative ways of spreading joy and inspiration. Sometimes we might stumble and even fall, we might experience deep frustration and fatigue and paralysis, we might lose hope and our optimism … and that is understandable and normal.

Now we rest, we ask for help, we do what we need to do to nurture ourselves and refill that cookie jar … and the moment will come when we emerge again, refreshed, clearheaded, determined and ready to hand out our offerings from our own refilled cookie-jar.
Soon it will be time again to let those puppets dance, inspire, educate, bring change and new ideas, demonstrate new possibilities, heal, or simply bring a needed smile on somebody’s tired face. After some proper rest it will be so easy again to do!

Thanks for reading my ponderings, and I am glad to know you are out there in this crazy yet magnificent world.

Wishing you creative power and joy,
Bernd
