Doing Something Nice 🫶

Newsletter from November 7, 2025

Hi dear student,

I have been thinking for a few days what theme to pick for my next newsletter. Can‘t force the good stuff, and as you know I am not consulting AI, so I asked myself what I would like to hear right now. The answer I got was: do something nice!

So, today, as we are getting ready for a weekend I am sending you a simple nudge called “do something nice”. We all might have a completely different understanding what “nice” exactly means, so please take my suggestions only with a grain of salt.

When I think of doing something nice, the first thing that comes to my mind, is closing my computer and turning off my phone, so that whatever I decide doing I can do without distractions. The moment I sign off the cyberworld I start calming down and begin to fully enjoy each moment, drinking my morning brew without distractions, eating my breakfast without being bombarded with random and too often gruesome news, going for a walk and hang out with horses in my fjord, taking in all the power and beauty without distraction of any cell phone messages coming in. Picking up my carving knife and savoring the smell of wood, the process I make one woodchip at a time, fully focused in the now, undisturbed, undistracted, peacefully.

bernd-with-horse4

It sounds so simple and simple it is. We don’t have to travel to Iceland or Hawaii to start doing something nice, NICE is at our disposal pretty much all the time. A good cup of coffee is nice, so is eating breakfast, going for a walk is awesome, and building puppets, well that is of course hard to beat! But to truly savour all these nice things is the trick, a simple trick indeed if we manage to calm down our rambling minds for a little while. So, I would add a little meditation to my “nice-things-list”.

The best thing of granting myself to be fully in the moment and doing something nice, is that it gives me the energy, strength and joy to then going back into full gear being there for my loved ones, serving my students, my community. I will stay in my happy mode even when getting stuck in rush-hour traffic the next morning. It gives me the joyful heart to send out a calming smile to the stressed-out driver stuck in line right next to me. Smiling is of course something very nice to do, always!

Wishing you a super nice weekend from the Whalefjord here in Iceland,
Bernd

Safeguard Your Sanctuary — October 22, 2025

Safeguard Your Sanctuary

Newsletter from October 22, 2025

Hi dear student,

Maybe it’s carving wooden puppets, maybe it’s tending your garden, playing your piano or going for a walk in your favourite park; I would consider all those activities to be a possible sanctuary, like Meditation is and Mindfulness. Choosing time to spend in your sanctuary is choosing to come back to the now. Coming back from the whirlwind of a fast spinning world that constantly wants to pull you away from your own center, distracts you from your “soul-center”.

If we loose that center, we loose ourselves. If we loose ourselves we ignore our soul calling, our precious opportunity to truly make a difference in this world.

A sanctuary is a sacred space. We must guard this sacred space, and be on the constant lookout for all the distractions that pull us out of this space. Only you can truly protect that space. Your feelings are a good indicator showing you if you have left your sanctuary. Anxiety, fear and worry are typical examples of your own mind intruding your sanctuary, pulling you into a distant past that is gone, or a future that has not yet materialised, away from the only time that really matters, your precious here and now.

Yes of course, sometimes it is good and necessary to ponder the past and future, but if it never really allows us to fully dwell in the here and now, we are definitely missing out on all the good stuff.

worlds-of-puppets-marionette-workshop

Our body postures and breathing are other great indicators inviting us to return to our sanctuary. Tight shoulders and forgetting to breathe will disconnect us from the abundant good energy available to us at any time. Just one deep breath can already help us to “come back”.

Does it mean we should hide from the world, the internet and watching the news? I don‘t think so, but there is a clear distinction between staying informed, chosing carefully or getting sucked into a dark hole of negativity.

We live in very challenging times, where all the terrors of the world are rubbed into our awareness non stop, where the golden age of information seems to drown into a muddy ocean of AI (the “I” often standing for insanity), where we will loose our own sanity if we do not actively nurture our sanctuaries and our HSI (Human Soulful Intelligence).

Sanctuaries come in many forms and are widely available to us. We have the choice to consciously invest in a good book, good music, good company or in the case of my students and me, to build a nurturing puppet show that matters. Does it matter? Of course it does!

Everything that springs from our sacred space matters and has the power to open a crack into the shadow and let in the light. That is why it is so important to invest into yourself, to give yourself space and time and let that sanctuary grow and extend. From your personal sanctuary you can build save relationships, save families, save communities.

In that sense I want to extend my gratitude today to all my amazing students that have made our online community such a truly unique, save and supportive sanctuary. Also a big cyber hug to everyone out there that keeps honouring their soul calling and has the heart and grit to keep creating, dancing, singing and loving, by save-guarding their personal and communal sanctuaries.

Please keep shining your light, it does matter!

Best regards from the Whale Fjord in Iceland,
Bernd

Progress Over Perfection — October 15, 2025

Progress Over Perfection

Newsletter from October 15, 2025

Hi dear student,

You might wonder if I am always in such a positive and productive mood as portrait in my Newsletters. The honest answer is NO. Just like everyone else I have days where everything seems to fly easily off my never ending “to-do-list”, and days where I would love to stay in bed (with a good book), pull a blanket over my head and order a take-out café latte straight to my bedroom.

But here is how I like to look at these days in another way:
a) it is completely ok to feel like this sometimes!
b) it might in fact help us to initiate some changes in our lives if this becomes a chronic situation.
c) and finally, there are a couple of great things we can do to get us back into a more satisfying and productive state of being.

Let us first contemplate a valuable Philosophy: “Progress over Perfection”.

Right here, we have one key to help getting us out of bed in the morning. We do not need to be perfect, despite what all those voices in our heads make us believe. As Joseph Nguyen phrased it poignantly, “Don’t believe everything you think”.

worlds-of-puppets-alfie-atkins

Wherever and whenever our thinking of perfection was instilled into our being, it might now be time to let it go. The idea of perfection all too often stops us from taking the crucial little steps in making progress. No child would learn to walk, no pianist would learn to play a Beethoven Sonata, none of my students would ever build any puppet if they would not focus on approaching their tasks only one humble step at a time.

First step today might simply be to get out of bed, make a cup of coffee, sit for a while and feeling grateful for this new day, the legs that carried us out of bed, the smell of coffee, the computer or smart phone that connects us to the world and with a crazy puppeteer in Iceland that keeps sending you letters with his curious contemplations.

The amazing thing is that these simply humble steps are more powerful than we might think. I find that the attitude of gratitude and acknowledging and celebrating each simple step can indeed introduce yet another fine day full of great possibilities, like building wooden puppets or whatever it is that you decide to do.

So here’s to getting out of bed, a good cup of coffee or tea and making some progress one humble step at a time; sounds just about perfect to me.

Best regards from the Whale Fjord in Iceland,
Bernd

Inspired Action and a Little Wooden Fish — October 8, 2025

Inspired Action and a Little Wooden Fish

Newsletter from October 8, 2025

Hi dear student,

My youngest grandchild just turned two. What to give a little guy that is literally showered on his Birthday with generous presents from friends and relations?

I decided to make him a little wooden fish puppet; the type I teach my students to build in our Academy of the Wooden Puppet. The fish is carved from only two parts connected by a leather strip, attached to a rod with a little wheel that moves the tail when turning it. A simple yet extremely satisfying mechanical experience for any youngster (and their parents). My present came with a set of watercolors so we can paint it together, and a lifetime guarantee to fix it … until he is old enough to do it himself.

In all honesty, the large selection of plastic tractors he received caught more of his attention, and that is ok. I was not trying to compete with those really cool toys. I simply loved making this little fish for him and will continue to be the grandpa that still upholds and nurtures the tradition of little mechanical wonders, that might actually survive the pile of exciting plastic toys that are doomed to eventually land on the landfill. I look forward repairing it with him one day.

worlds-of-puppets-wooden-fish

So, for me it is not about wood “against” plastic, it is about upholding the understanding and love for wood and natural materials, keeping the balance and awareness of sustainability. Plastic is here to stay, and my goodness do I love my plastic rubber boots living here in Iceland. We have the freedom to make conscious choices.

This choice is important. This choice also applies to other areas of our life that sometimes become overwhelming and “out of balance”. Social media for example is not a terrible thing if we know how to handle it and we don’t let it handle us! Watching the news is important to stay informed yet can become a perpetual shower of negativity if we allow it to.

The world has always been a place of wonder, love, magic and a collection of horrible events all at the same time. What is our place in all this? For most of us it is still a daily choice. Some choose brave activism, some have the guts to work in politic or focus on social opportunities to have a positive impact, yet others teach the making of a little wooden fish. All this counts, all this matters!

Soul inspired action matters, it is the wholesome antidote to becoming paralyzed, to get stuck in the shower of negativity and fear. How do we get inspired to take inspired action? By stopping non-inspired action, by consciously slowing down the automated trot and shutting out those outer detrimental voices long enough that we can start hearing our own voice again. Out of silence and stillness springs inspired action. Inspired action will change ourselves, so we can change the world … possibly one little wooden fish at a time.

Sending my warmest regards and cheering you on, always
Bernd

A Valuable Old Cliché — September 30, 2025

A Valuable Old Cliché

Newsletter from September 30, 2025

Hi dear student,

Do what you love and love what you do, some insist, while others cast this notion aside as a cheap and “impossible” cliché. Yet, I fully agree! I reckon it to be a rather challenging task to be of any true, authentic and sustainable good to anyone, if we are not spending our precious time in our happy zone.

Some love to clean their car and will do an amazing job at it, dusting off every speckle of dirt and dust, making that metal shine, forgetting completely about time while doing it. Guess how my car looks like!

More significant though is our time “at work”, where we tend to spend most of our precious awake-hours. Can a teacher be truly giving and nurturing if he does not love his work? Can a mechanic truly serve with joy and dedication if she hates working on motors?

More and more of my time is now devoted to assisting artists to live a fulfilling and sustainable life doing what they love doing most. The biggest hindrance in the process is not that there is supposedly no market for their work or a seemingly declining supportive environment in our challenged societies. The biggest block to becoming a successful artist is a limiting mindset and voices not reflecting our soul calling.

From the believe that we are not good enough to being selfish, the glorification of struggle and overworking to a detrimental disbelief in universal support of our highest good, it is wise to contemplate on the power of believe and thought, and the fact that we have a choice in what to believe and think.

worlds-of-puppets-bernd-coloring

We are not cute, furry little rabbits instinctively hopping around from one carrot to the next, we are powerful mindful beings full of free choices and incredible potential. It might take a little extra work and dedication to harness a new believe, the unlearning of old detrimental habits and thoughts, but it is possible. We can choose for example to read inspiring and instructive books, listen to educational podcasts, take an online course or retreat, and start a breakthrough transformation … if that is what we want! We are where our attention is, so let’s choose wisely!

The rewards are many, not only for ourselves, but for everyone around us. People that do not enjoy are unenjoyable, people who love doing what they do are the best possible service providers imaginable! And that of course is my repeated claim, that art is foremost a service, our way of giving, inspiring and enriching the world.

How to start? Where to find a guiding light? I believe and fully trust that our soul provides an inner knowing matching a higher source, whatever name we like to give it. This inner voice has been calling us all along, but we might have been way to busy and noisy to hear, paying attention to other voices instead. How has that worked out for us until now?

Every day offers a new opportunity to break an old cycle, to decide on a new path, to do what you are really called doing, soul inspired, to do what makes you happy, to allow your light to shine. The supporting book, friend, teacher, random stranger will show up to lead you on, if you decide to pay attention.

Sending my warmest greetings, always
Bernd

Can We Also Drop Our Old (Be-)Leaves? — September 22, 2025

Can We Also Drop Our Old (Be-)Leaves?

Newsletter from September 22, 2025

Hi dear student,

I just traveled to Up-State New York to celebrate my youngest grandson’s 2nd Birthday party. Perfect timing: that means I also arrived for the annual spectacular autumn celebration of this region. Happy Fall Equinox! Happy color explosion!

I purposefully used the word celebration, as if Autumn was a well planned and executed event, which of course it is. But instead of going into a scientific explanation of why the leaves of the trees turn red, yellow and brown before finally dropping to the ground, I’d like to use the metaphoric language of the storyteller again: The trees are celebrating the end of the summer, the season of growing and having exuberant experiences of all sorts. They put on their prettiest clothes with their brightest colors and dance in the autumn breeze to the light of a fading summer sun, until frost and wind will put an end to the festivities.

The trees will eventually drop their leaves and enter a state of hibernation; barren and cold they will stand and withstand the forces of a harsh winter, the season of stillness and introspection. Yet, if we observe carefully, we might also notice that the leaves have been replaced with new buds, the promise of new growth for the coming year.

If that is all too un-scientific for you, let’s boil it down to the essentials. If the trees don’t drop their leaves they will suffer badly. Winter will always destroy the foliage, but not harm the buds, the promise of new growth!

worlds-of-puppets-bernd-aladdin-forest

As we are getting increasingly detached from the forces of nature, having light and heat and food at our disposal all year round, we might unfortunately also get overly detached from the deeper wisdom of nature’s endless lessons. The exuberant act of letting go, which trees demonstrate so powerfully, can serve as the best reminder for our own ability and choice to let go. It is engraved in the nature of a tree to automatically let go of old leaves. But we can choose freely! We can decide and learn to actively let go of things, behaviours and believes which do not serve us anymore.

Why bother? Well, even if we truly live the life of our dreams right now, stagnation would eventually get the best of us if we are not willing to shed old leaves and grow new buds.

In our online classes we often discuss the wisdom of trees manifested in the marvelous building material we use to create our wooden puppets. On this path of learning to craft those puppets we have ample opportunity to let go of old limiting behaviours and believes such as: I don’t deserve, I am not talented enough, not good enough, too old, too broke, no time … Trees don’t waste a second in such vane acts of self-sabotage. They just do what trees do: they steadily grow green leaves, turn them yellow and red, let them go and then start all over again. And this is how an acorn turns into a mighty oak.

Wishing you a contemplative and happy Fall Equinox,
Bernd

Happy Birthday to a Brave Girl! — September 18, 2025

Happy Birthday to a Brave Girl!

Newsletter from July 18, 2025

Hi dear student,

Happy 80th Birthday Pippi Longstocking!! The renowned Swedish children’s book author Astred Lindgren explained that “Pippi represents my own childish longing for a person who has power but does not abuse it.” Although she is the strongest girl in the world, Pippi uses nonviolence to solve conflicts. She portrays unbound phantasy and creativity to protect other children from bullying and to maintain her own sovereignty. Pippi also has tremendous challenges, she missed her mom early in life, and her dad, if still alive, is a pirate far away sailing the south seas. She lives alone with an old unwanted horse and a little monkey. Yet, Pippi is the epitome of optimism. She is warmhearted, compassionate, kind, clever, generous, playful, witty and always finds a positive way to deal with all the many challenges in life.

It was not an option for me to say no to the invitation by the National Theater of Iceland to build two characters for a main stage Production of the famed children story. Those following me on social media have witnessed the making of the Monkey Mr. Nilsson and the Horse named Little Old Man.

Today I don’t want to talk about the challenges of making these puppets but rather acknowledge the absolute privilege of being able to take part in the creation of such a mega production! I am grateful and so proud of my little Island Nation, to invest in such elaborate artistic and cultural events. A marvelous team of way over hundred artists, administrators, actors, dancers, musicians, designers, technicians celebrated a whooping premier last weekend together with an overly enthusiastic audience. Over 50 performances are already sold out in advance, which means that thousands of children and their parents will get inspired by the brave, kind, loving, warm-hearted and optimistic Pippi.

Being widely rejected at first in 1944, the adventures of Pippi Longstocking were finally published in 1945 and have ever since encouraged generations of children around the globe to let their uniqueness shine despite all odds. For us artists the constant call remains, to keep the spirit up, just like Pippi did for 80 years; to nourish kindness over bitterness, humor over self-pity, protection over bullying, and to relentlessly use our unlimited creativity and brave hearts to nurture peace, healing and hope. Unrealistic????? … come watch the show!

Sending much love from the Whalefjord in Iceland, and if you feel someone you treasure could benefit from these newsletters, please invite them to sign up via our webpage worldsofpuppets.com.

Inspired Action — September 9, 2025

Inspired Action

Newsletter from September 9, 2025

Hi dear student,

To become a successful artist, it is wise to integrate all the various strengths and qualities of our human capacity, both the mind and the heart, both intuition and clear precise thinking.

Consciously integrating all these gifts will lead to INTEND, the focused, crystal clear concentration of energy to reach our goals.
In that context we must learn to differentiate between struggle and inspired action.

Most artist have most likely experienced both. They might have experienced the easy flow of following an inspiration, picked up a piece a wood and created the marionette of their dreams. Yet, when it came to selling their puppet show or paying the rent for their studio it caused anxiety and sleepless nights.

The good news is that we can learn to find the golden balance. We can decide to consciously break the cycle of being stuck in either dream land or analytical thinking. But we must truly want that and we must admit that we have a choice. We are not victims.

It is certainly easier to complain and join the “artists must struggle chorus” than doing our necessary homework. But is it really? Is it not way more satisfying to initiate the rewards of change and possibly experience the ease and flow of inspired action and clear intend?

How to get there? Well in all honesty it took me a lifetime of conscious learning and un- learning. It takes the decision and willingness to change, letting go of old limiting beliefs, being truly open for new ways to enter our lives.

In my experience the backbone to such a life is meditation and mindfulness. Stillness, and a quiet mind will allow for sacred inspiration to enter our being. Out from this stillness springs inspired action = Intend. And because inspired action is not created from our egoistic limited thinking mind but a higher source, the Universe will support these actions in miraculous ways, commonly known as the “Law of Attraction”.

Here you go, these were my insights after my morning meditation, that you hopefully don’t mind me sharing with you. And what will I do now? I will do some bookkeeping, fun bookkeeping I say, as this is part of my holistic experience of being a successful artist. Then later today I will assist with rehearsals on the stage of the National Theater of Iceland, where my live-size horse and monkey (I shared the building process on social media) will celebrate a Premiere next Saturday. Later in the afternoon I will meet my students online for a super fun Q and A session, where I am sure we shall continue this discussion.

So, I let you go with my best wishes for your artistic wellbeing. Remember, success is only 5% talent and 95% mindset … you can do it too!!

A Promise to My Dad — September 3, 2025

A Promise to My Dad

Newsletter from September 3, 2025

Hi dear student,

This week my Dad would have turned 100 years old. He passed on years back at the ripe age of 93 and was thus spared the challenges of Covid and the present political and social upheavals.

What he passed on to me were not only good genes, a fine sense of humour and generosity at large, but most importantly a mountain of kindness. And all that despite his painful and harsh upbringing in Nazi Germany, an alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother who was in fact killed by the Nazis simply for being ill. Don´t worry, I get back to the good stuff in a minute!!

Naturally my dad also passed on to me what I call “the German Backpack“, a load of unhealed traumas, secrets and burdens that are bound to impact the next generations to come, unless my generation is willing to dig into this backpack and actively starts the healing process.

Our performance of „The Puppet Master“ was the result of years of active searching and healing, a tour de force of opening up my heart and soul and an active effort to brake the repetitive and destructive cycle we are still witnessing unfolding in our world today.

What about the good stuff I promised? Well, here it is, we can brake the cycle and overcome, we can heal and support healing. But it all starts with ourselves. No blaming game, no finger pointing, not complaining and not being the victim will change the world. It must start with our own true inner transformation.

From here the ripple effect of our own healing will spread it‘s magic. As a parent, a teacher, a politician, a cleaner or a puppeteer, we will impact the world around us for the better.

So, I promised my late Dad, or Paps as we called him, to do my homework and then pick up his golden rule of kindness and compassion. I am grateful for his legacy he left behind, and I am also ever so grateful to all my students and colleges that are equally comitted to let their light shine. We are in this together!

Oh, there are more good things to announce, great news from Worlds of Puppets, but I save them for a later Newsletter. For today I simply send you all my loving thoughts and strengthening winds from the Whalefjord here in Iceland.

Of Mosquitos and Dandelion — August 8, 2025

Of Mosquitos and Dandelion

Newsletter from August 8, 2025

Hi dear student,

In my last newsletter I shared my fascination and overwhelming inspiration I received from witnessing the volcanic eruptions here in Iceland. More important though I esteem the mindset and keen eye to be aware of the small everyday wonders constantly offered to us. It is easy to get filled with energy and joy when living on our small magical island close to the arctic circle, but no matter where we are in this world, we can take note of gifts of inspiration and hope.

It might be an overused cliché to cite the resilient dandelion cracking the asphalt, yet, who cannot use a little dose of the hopeful enthusiasm of a child holding up the magical seedball – puffball – “Pusteblume” of that dandelion, taking a deep breath and releasing the multitude of little seed-parachutes into the world and thus planting new bright yellow flowers to decorate the world and crack the dull asphalt.

worlds-of-puppets-dandelion

It is a free gift, a free choice to keep the eyes and mind open for those wonders. They certainly help me to keep going in times of frustration, horror and powerlessness about the daily news.

I like to remind my students of Puppetry to just spend time observing a common housefly or even a mosquito, to admire their glistening wings and acrobatic flying skills defying all our feeble attempts to catch them! It keeps us humble and appreciative if we remember that we are all but a small part of a larger network of life on earth, us humans, the dandelion and the mosquito. Maybe that will give us the strength to continue lending our energy to counterbalance the arrogant, ignorant and straight out evil political powers at work. Suspecting that the common fly will most likely outlive our human existence on this planet I find not only humbling but it also puts a smile on my face.

Sending warmest regards from North-West Iceland, where I just performed on a small annual Theater Festival and will now retreat for a few days into the remote regions of the West Fjords. Good to turn off WIFI for a while and focus on the dandelions and maybe spot a whale offshore … I’ll be back soon!
